Peace How is a truly special area of land, donated to the National Trust in 1917 so that anyone affected by the First World War could come here to enjoy the peace and tranquillity. I am sure you will agree that standing on the top of Peace How and enjoying the amazing Lake District views does bring a sense of calmness and happiness. This area of land is included in the tenancy for Hollows Farm and is enjoyed by hundreds if not thousands of walkers per year using the public footpath that passes through.
We are very careful about the management of peace how and keep it as unimproved grassland, due to this area having many native grasses growing, alongside providing habitat for ground nesting birds, hares and also the native wax cap mushroom. Carefully thought out sheep grazing keeps the swards of grass the perfect length for these species, making sure to graze at the correct times of year can encourage some of our rarer native plants to thrive.
